Tasting notes

Bizzarria Bianco is bright straw yellow in colour with lively golden highlights. On the nose it is layered and enhanced by the Chardonnay and the aromatic array of the Traminer: outstanding floral aromas (chamomile), hints of citrus fruit (tangerine, lemon zest) and crusty bread. In the mouth it is plush, caressing and firm with a velvety finesse that comes from the time it spends with the fine-grained yeasts. The richness of flavour and the mineral touch enhance the length and appeal; it finishes long with an elegant note of bitter almond.

Soil and vineyard

The grapes grow on on clayey-limestone soil in a small vineyard known as “Romagnola”. The dominant geological formation is marine substrates of flaky marl with beds of white limestone. In terms of grape ripening the north-exposure of the rows of vines arranged along the maximum gradient allows for a favourable temperature range between day and night, enhancing the typical aromas of the different varieties. The vine training system adopted here is the Guyot which guarantees respect of the vine and its productive and vegetative balance. Autumn green manure crops of different kinds are grown to serve as a soil amendment improving its structure and hydrological stability. Average annual production: 30 hl/ha – 3,000 bottles

Carefully selected grapes are harvested into crates and immediately taken to the winery in the early dawn hours in order to preserve the aromas and the acidity of the fruit. The grapes are lightly pressed with their stems, and the free-run juice ferments with the indigenous yeasts. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature and no fining agent it used so as to keep the natural cloudiness. The wine remains on the lees for at least 12 months, in stainless steel tanks, with frequent stirring.

Food pairing

Bizzarria Bianco pairs beautifully with raw fish dishes, crustaceans, and seafood pastas and risottos. Very pleasant with spring soups, white meat dishes and soft cheeses. Serve chilled, but not iced, to preserve the great aromatic integrity of the wine. 14/16 °C is the ideal serving temperature.

Since 2017 Poggio Torselli is conducted under organic farming methods and grows its grapes following principles of biodynamic faming. Bizzarria (Citrus Aurantium) is a rare citrus fruit (graft between Sour Orange and the Florentine Citron) that grows in the stunning Italian Renaissance Garden of Poggio Torselli. Three citrus fruits, like the three varieties of grapes that make up this “Super Tuscan” white wine true expression of the Poggio Torselli terroir.
